Troops overran leftist rebels' camp in Compostella |

COTABATO, Philippines -- Philippine security forces captured a camp of leftist rebels and several improvise bombs in the southern part of the country, a regional military spokesman said on Saturday.
Major Randolph Cabangbang, spokesman of the military's Eastern Command, said the rebel's camp was uncovered when a small team of Charlie Company troops from the Army's 25th Infantry Battalion clashed at around 06:00 a.m. local time on Friday with 50 New Peoples Army in the village of Salvacion, Mongkayo town in Compostella Valley Province. Cabangbang said that a soldier was killed and two others were injured in the gun battle. "During The clearing operation, soldiers recovered six improvised explosive devices with detonating cords and blasting caps and other war materiel," Cabangbang said. Philippine soldiers earlier captured a rebel encampment in nearby village of Baylo in same town. The NPA has been waging a guerrilla campaign in the countryside for four decades. Military estimates placed the NPA strength at more than 5,000 men scattered in more than 60 guerrilla fronts throughout the country. -- Phil.Star |
