Landmine blast wounds 6 in N. Cotabato Print
Tuesday, 26 January 2010
MANILA, Philippines -- Six Philippine soldiers were wounded in a landmine blast in Makilala, North Cotabato Tuesday evening, the military said.

The troops from the 62nd Division Reconnaissance Company were on their way back to headquarters when their vehicle hit a landmine in Balatukan village around 6:15 p.m.

Col. Alejandro Estomo, commander of the Army’s 602nd Brigade, said the soldiers had just played basketball at a nearby church. He said the blast occurred about 150 meters from the soldier’s headquarters.

It was not immediately clear who planted the landmine. A number of armed groups are known to operate in the province, including the secessionist Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

Apart from the wounding of the six troopers who were brought to the Makilala Medical Specialist Hospital, the attack also damaged the vehicle of the soldiers.

Estomo said troops responded and conducted pursuit operations. -- ABS-CBN
