Blast rocks Sulu cathedral Print
Sunday, 10 January 2010

SULU, Philippines -- A grenade blast rocked a Catholic Cathedral in Sulu province before dawn Sunday. Probers said that while the explosion caused minor damage to the cathedral, there was no report of casualty.

Senior Supt. Ben Latag, officer-in-charge of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) police, said the incident occurred at about 5:40 a.m. inside the compound of the Jolo Cathedral, Walled City, Jolo, Sulu. Marine elements are now securing the cathedral. No one was hurt from the explosion, which shattered some jalousies of the cathedral’s windows.

The explosion occurred hours after the Commission on Elections’ (Comelec’s) nationwide firearms ban took effect. But police could not say yet if the incident was election-related.

Explosives Ordnance Division (EOD) and scene of the crime operatives (SOCO) were immediately sent to the area to conduct an investigation on the incident. -- Manila Bulletin
