BACOLOD CITY -- A self-confessed finance and logistic officer of the “Sangay sa Partido sa Platoon” of the Kilusang Larangan South West, gave himself up to the 302nd Infantry Brigade, and surrendered an M-16 assault rifle with several magazines of ammunition and explosives, Lt. Col. Rodrigo Sosmena, Task Group South West commander, said yesterday.

NPA rebel surrenders to 52IB Print

SAMAR, Philippines -- One NPA member named Alger M Abalos aka Fredie surrendered to 1st Lt. Dario Wayagwag of the Charlie Company of the 52nd Infantry Battalion (IB) based in Barangay Pequit, Paranas, Samar.

Abalos, a regular member of RHB, is 35 years old and single, he is said to be a resident of Barangay Lokilokon, Paranas, Samar according to a text message forwarded by Col Armand Rico of the 8th Infantry Division (ID) Philippine Army.

Said rebel brought with him one M 16 rifle with serial number RP 167104 with ten short and one long magazines270 rounds M 16 cartridge and one hand grenade.

Rico acknowledged one soldier named Cpl Joey Pacaway who was instrumental in the surrender of Abalos.

In a related development, 8th ID Commanding General Arthur Tabaquero admitted that they felt short of the mandate by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, that of ending up insurgency by the end of this year.

However, the general said there were several intervening factors that resulted to this like the pull-out of some three battalions whose presence could have made a difference.

The general is confident though that the higher ups will take cognizance of some gains that the military has achieved despite the odds.  -- PIA
